Free and Reduced-Price School Meals: 2026 Income Limits

Two thresholds decide the price of lunch: 130% of poverty for free and 185% for reduced price. One application covers every child in the household.

The short answer

For 2026–27, a family of four qualifies for free meals at up to about $42,900 a year ($3,575 a month) and for reduced-price meals up to about $61,050 a year ($5,088 a month). Children in foster care, Head Start, or a CEP school qualify free without an income application.

The result is based on the standard income application. Categorical eligibility — foster care, homelessness, migrant status, Head Start, or direct certification through SNAP — can qualify a child regardless of income. Ask the school's nutrition office.

Computed from the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines at the statutory 130% and 185% multiples. USDA publishes the official annual figures, which schools use for their applications.

How to apply

  1. Get the application from the school district or the state's online portal.
  2. List every child in the household and the school each one attends.
  3. Report total household income before taxes, including unemployment.
  4. Add the case number if anyone receives SNAP or TANF — that can direct-certify the children.
  5. Submit before the school year starts. One application covers the household.

Community Eligibility

Under Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), schools in high-poverty areas serve free meals to all students without household applications. The 2026 threshold for CEP identification is 25% directly certified students, with an option to expand; eligibility is set by USDA and state agencies.

If the school is on the CEP list, every student eats free — the household does not apply and does not need to report income.

Meal eligibility often travels with the other programs. A child approved for free meals may also qualify for WIC (under 5) and for Medicaid or CHIP at the children's income limit.

Common questions

What is the income limit for free school meals?+

A household at or below 130% of the federal poverty level qualifies for free meals. For 2026–27 that is about $42,900 a year for a family of four, or $3,575 a month. Households between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price meals.

Do I have to apply every year?+

Yes, unless the child is directly certified through SNAP, TANF, Medicaid or another program, or attends a Community Eligibility Provision school. A new application is normally needed at the start of each school year.

What is Community Eligibility Provision?+

CEP lets high-poverty schools serve free breakfast and lunch to every student without collecting household applications. Schools qualify based on the share of students identified as eligible through other programs. If your school is CEP, no meal application is needed — every student eats free.

Does one application cover all children in the household?+

Yes. One application per household covers every child enrolled in the district, and the information can also be used to waive certain school fees. Submit it once and list all the children.

Can foster children get free meals automatically?+

Yes. Children in foster care, children who are homeless or migrant, and children in Head Start are categorically eligible for free meals and can be certified without an income application. Tell the school's nutrition office which category applies.

What if I apply late in the year?+

Approval is not retroactive to the start of the year in most districts. Submit the application as early as possible; a new household can apply at any point in the year when income changes.
