Child Benefits Timeline: Pregnancy to Age 18
Benefit websites are organized by program. Life is organized by age. Each stage below lists what to apply for now, what to have ready, and the one deadline that matters at that age.
How to use this page
Find the child's current age and work down. The three blocks at each stage are deliberately separate: applications, documents and deadlines fail for different reasons. Most coverage losses in this timeline come from a missed renewal, not from a change in eligibility.
Pregnancy: coverage and food support before the baby arrives
Pregnancy raises the Medicaid income limit in every state, and it opens WIC immediately. This is the stage where an application produces the most value for the least paperwork.
Apply now
Documents
- • Photo ID and proof of state residence
- • Proof of pregnancy from a provider or clinic
- • Income proof for the last 30 days
- • Immigration documents, if applicable — pregnancy coverage rules vary
Deadline
Apply as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. Medicaid can cover bills from up to three months before the application in many states.
Newborn: automatic coverage, WIC and the first renewals
A baby born to a mother on Medicaid is automatically eligible for one year in every state. The work is administrative: add the baby to the case, get the birth certificate and Social Security number, and keep the WIC appointment.
Documents
- • Birth certificate (usually issued by the hospital)
- • Social Security number for the baby
- • Updated household income
- • Immunization record for the WIC visit
Deadline
Add the baby to coverage within 60 days of birth — that is also the marketplace special-enrollment window if the family is not on Medicaid.
Toddler and preschool: WIC, child care and early education
The costs shift from delivery to child care. WIC continues until the fifth birthday, and child care subsidies and Head Start become the two programs that make work possible.
Apply now
Documents
- • Child's birth certificate and immunization record
- • Proof of work, training or school for the child care subsidy
- • Current child care provider and weekly cost
- • Income proof for the last 30 days
Deadline
Child care subsidy waiting lists are common. Apply before you need the care, not after the job starts.
Starting school: meals, coverage renewal and enrollment
Kindergarten triggers a new set of applications. Meal eligibility is the fastest win, and the Medicaid/CHIP renewal usually lands in the same season.
Apply now
Documents
- • Proof of address for school enrollment
- • Immunization record
- • Household income or SNAP/TANF case number for meal certification
- • The Medicaid or CHIP renewal letter
Deadline
Submit the meal application before the first day of school. Approval is usually not retroactive to the start of the year.
Elementary years: keep the renewals from lapsing
Most losses at this stage are procedural, not eligibility changes. A renewal letter that goes unanswered ends coverage even when the family still qualifies.
Apply now
Documents
- • The renewal notice and its deadline
- • Current income documents
- • Updated address and household list
- • Any support-letter from a school or provider
Deadline
Respond to the renewal notice by its printed date. Coverage can end the month after a missed deadline.
Teens: coverage to 19, school meals and the transition to adult rules
CHIP generally covers children through age 18, and the children's Medicaid limits stay far above the adult limit. At 19 the rules change sharply — plan the transition before the birthday.
Documents
- • Birth certificate and Social Security number
- • Household income and tax return
- • School enrollment verification for meal benefits
- • Immigration documents, if applicable
Deadline
Check the upper age limit in your state before the 19th birthday — a few states cover children longer, and the adult application is separate.
